Walking the Lillydale-Warburton rail trail

The sun held out despite the clouds hanging on the mountains, as we wandered along the rail trail near Yarra Junction in Victoria. The trail goes all the way from Lillydale to Warburton, but we only did a few kilometres of it.

Brunch at Nancy's of the Valley was delicious. Scrambled eggs, mushrooms and spinach kept us going all day. Friendly staff and atmosphere.

Charging

Our Tesla only had 60% battery when we left home. We could have fully charged overnight, but we prefer to charge from solar during the day. It’s heaps more than we need for a day trip.

Yarra Junction has a new Evie Networks fast charger. We tested it just to try out the new “auto charge” feature, where you can just plug in and walk away. No need to use a card or app or anything, just like a Tesla Supercharger. I’ll post separately about that.

  1. Hi Tom
I have just switched to a new PowerShop “EV Day Plan” which offers $0 rate between 12:00 and 1:59 pm for EV owners who also have a home rooftop solar power system. It suits retired and people who work from home. I think Origin Energy offer a similar plan.

Using this system, I can charge from my Tesla Wall unit at full bore, 3-phase without worrying about the cost of mains power I am using between 12:00 and 1:59 pm. 😀

    1. Hugh Sykes Nice! 11kW (limit of the Tesla Model 3) x 2 hours = 22kWh, which is a third of your battery for free each day! Probably about 130km. Nice.

On average, our solar system gives us more than two hours a day free power, but only at 7.5kW single phase. So, we just use it directly, for free.

We’re connected through Amber Electric, which just passes on the current wholesale price. Several days in summer, they actually pay us to use the electricity in the middle of the day! Because renewables are so cheap.

  3. I've almost finished a 900km day trip. I am glad Tesla let's other EVs use Superchargers. Getting my MG4 to 80% for the run from Yass to Wagga.

  4. We are on our way back to Mackay, we did a road trip to Wollongong, the Bruce Highway is great SAID NO ONE EVER 🥴

2 nice big cracks on the way down between Mackay and Rocky, looks like I'll be in the phone to insurance tomorrow which I'm sure will be painful.

    1. Kylie Gilroy Crack in the windscreen? We had one of those. I was glad we chose the extra windscreen insurance option, so the cost of a new windscreen was covered.

      1. Tesla Tripping these are quite big cracks otherwise we would just get Windscreen O'Briens to plug them up.

    1. Hi Kylie, we've put together a list of incompatible chargers in this support article: https://support.goevie.com.au/hc/en-us/articles/100633215…

To make it easy to find a compatible charger we recommend using the Evie Map and clicking on "Filter" in the top right hand corner of the screen. From there, you'll find a toggle that says "Autocharge compatible chargers". Turn that on and hen hit save on the top right hand corner of the screen and your map will only show you compatible chargers now.

      Hope this helps!
