Elec Tripping is a personal blog run by Tom and Francis from Emerald, Victoria, Australia. We've tried to keep this page short and honest. If you'd like anything explained or changed, email sysadmin@electripping.au.
What we collect, and when
When you read the site
- Our web host (HostGator) writes standard Apache request logs containing your IP address, the URL you requested, your browser type, and a timestamp. These logs are kept by the host for short-term debugging and are not analysed by us.
- We don't run analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking scripts. There are no cookies set on visit.
When you leave a comment
The comment form asks for:
- A display name (shown publicly with your comment).
- An email address (not shown publicly; used to send you a one-time verification link, and for us to contact you if needed).
- The comment body itself.
We log the IP address of comment submissions for rate-limiting and spam-prevention. IPs are not displayed publicly and are pruned after 30 days.
When you sign in with Facebook
If you choose the "Sign in with Facebook" option on the comment form, Meta sends us your public Facebook user id, display name, profile picture URL, and the email address registered to your Facebook account. We use these only to associate your comment with your identity and to display your name and avatar beside it. We don't post to your Facebook account, message your friends, or ask for any other permission.
Facebook comments we imported
Many of the comments on this site originated as public comments on the Tesla Tripping Facebook page between 2022 and the present. We have mirrored them here so that the discussion isn't lost if Facebook deprecates the page or changes its API. For each imported comment we store:
- The comment text and timestamp.
- Where available, the commenter's public display name, Facebook profile URL, and avatar image.
- The Facebook reaction counts on each comment (likes, loves, etc.) and a link back to the original comment on Facebook.
If you'd like a comment of yours attributed differently, hidden, or removed, email the address above and we'll fix it within a few days.
What we don't do
- We don't sell, rent, or share your data with third parties.
- We don't run advertising or use ad tracking.
- We don't transmit your data anywhere except (a) to our own database on the web host, and (b) the relevant authentication provider (Meta) at the moment you choose to sign in with Facebook.
- We don't keep more data than we need to render comments and notify you of replies.
Your rights
You can:
- Ask for any comment you've made (including imported ones) to be edited, anonymised, or deleted.
- Ask for an export of every record we hold about you. We'll respond within a reasonable time, usually within seven days.
- Withdraw consent for further processing. We'll delete your account, your stored email, your authentication tokens, and any non-public records, and leave only the bare comment text under "Anonymous".
We try to behave consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). This site is run on a personal basis and is below the legislative thresholds that apply to commercial operators, but the spirit of the legislation is what we aim for.
Children
The site is intended for a general audience. We don't knowingly accept comments or sign-ins from children under thirteen. If we become aware that we hold data from a child, we'll delete it immediately.
Changes
We may update this page if the way the site works changes (for example, if we add another sign-in provider). The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the current version. Significant changes will be flagged on the home page.
