Lunch with the Atto Gal's, halfway round Australia

We drove out to Jells Park, in eastern Melbourne, to meet up for lunch with Atto Gal's and “Gandalf” (Sarah Jane and Shane). They are past half way on their “big lap” around Australia in their Tesla Model 3, towing a pop up caravan.

A few days ago they were in Cronulla and tried to meet up with Scott Morrison to show him that an EV doesn’t “ruin the weekend” and that you can tow – in response to his now infamous claims a few years ago. Today we heard that he resigned. We don’t think it was actually prompted by their visit 😉.

In case you’re wondering why Sarah Jane is called “Atto Gal” – it’s because last year she drove her BYD Atto 3 EV from Perth to Sydney and back. So, this will be the second EV they’ve driven across the Nullarbor.

We love the park with its wide open green spaces and view of the lake. And plenty of room for parking a caravan. A few others also joined us. Lots of conversations about road tripping in Australia, EVs and misconceptions.

After we farewelled, they headed south to Sorrento to catch the car ferry across to Queenscliff, then along the Great Ocean Road, on their way back to Perth.

  1. My brother and I were privileged to be able to meet up with them for lunch as they passed through Canberra. Worth highlighting that they are towing that van with just a RWD!
