A bucket-o-chino at Cafe 3869, Yinnar

Fully Charged Sydney 2024

After staying overnight with our friends in Budgeree, we followed their BYD Atto 3 a few kilometers north to Cafe 3869 in Yinnar. We had the biggest coffee we’ve ever seen. It was like a bucket-o-chino!

We started heading north-ish, past the Loy Yang Coal Fired Power Station, and giant open cut coal mines with lots of sprinklers to try to contain the dust 😷.

We stopped in Bairnsdale for a brief break for the toilet and a stretch. A ute had ICEd one of the charging bays, but the signage doesn’t clearly state that they can’t. We walked through the large park that seems to divide the main road in town.

Then properly north along the Great Alpine Road towards Bright.

Charging

The Tesla Superchargers in Bairnsdale were installed in the past few months, since we’ve last been through here. As always, super easy to use. Just park, plug in, walk away. No card, cashier, queue or waiting. It probably took 20 seconds of my time for the charging. By the time we returned from the toilet, it was all done. We unplugged at drove away.

  1. We were in Yinnar a couple of nights ago in the RV stop, great town! I’m vegan and the cafe has vegan options too, very rare in a country town

    1. Evert Numan Fran had the bucket-o-chino, after a large cuppa. Tom had a few sips. We had to transfer it to our keep cup to take it on the road. That probably explains the need for the toilet stop in Bairnsdale.

      1. Tesla Tripping certainly would - coffee being a reasonable diuretic. 😛

It's a great area down there. During the worst phase of my inoperable sciatica, I used to drive from Melb's eastern suburbs down to and around that area a lot. I didn't get out of the car much - as I had a bad habit of collapsing due to the "pain", so I didn't get to enjoy the wonderful coffees and the like. I'm so glad you two (three with the model 3) do. It's nice to see the places you visit. :)

  4. You could have stopped at Yallourn W station for a 50kwh free top up.
I’m not sure if they have any free chargers at Loy Yang.

    1. Dynky Moke Yes, I have heard of that charger. But I would have felt dirty to charge up from a coal station 😉. Other chargers, such as Evie Networks, use 100% renewables.

      1. Tesla Tripping just because it’s outside a coal station doesn’t mean the power comes from there.

      2. David Burt True. I expect it’s basically whatever the grid mix is at the time, which is probably 60%+ renewables in the day time. But still, it would feel dirty 😉.

      1. David Burt thanks for providing this, I usually have no need to use it as I charge with the granny charger at home but it’s handy to have as a standby.

  5. So what ambiguity is there in the sign at the supercharger that allows the ute to identify as an EV?

    1. It’s okay, I saw your check in comment on PlugShare but I think it’s still obvious to blind freddy that he is not supposed to park there 😒

      1. Keith Strib The sign said “Tesla charging”, but I think it needs to include the word “only”, such as “parking only for Tesla charging”. But, yes, the purpose is fairly obvious.

    1. Margaret McDonald Hi Margaret. This was the beginning of our last trip up to NSW, when we saw you ☺️. I posted this after the event (catching up on the socials), but the date should be showing as February 7, when it happened. Sorry for the confusion 🥴.
