A hello to Ned Kelly in Glenrowan

Bombala + Central Coast 2024

Stopped for lunch in Glenrowan and said hello to Ned Kelly. Great town for a visit on the way through. Followed by a brief stop in Yea before arriving home in Emerald.

Charging

Unfortunately no fast chargers in Glenrowan township. There are some back up the road a bit at the service center along the highway. But we prefer to stop in actual towns rather than petrol service centres. An EV charger would be a great addition here.

We stopped to charged for four minutes in Yea, just for enough to get home. The navigation warned us of “reduced” capacity at Yea. When we arrived, a couple of Tesla technicians were working on the chargers. They said that remote diagnostics had alerted them to a drop of a few percent in output, so they were just being proactive to tune them up. Excellent! They kept two chargers available so travellers like us could still charge.

  1. Last month we borrowed a Tesla for a long trip (Sydney-Melbourne-Great Ocean Road and back). The opposite of the range-anxious who talk about a city EV and hiring an ICE for long trips!

This main road is excellent for charging, lots of choices. But you’re right - the road stations work, while charging stops at the dog on The Tuckerbox, Holbrook submarine, and Euroa were perfect fits for us, seeing pleasant towns entirely by accident, or doing something we wanted to do that had charging too.

A pleasant stretch was always nice. Chadston shopping centre Chargefox was coincidentally perfect (once we found it) - a full charge while doing the Lego tour.

But town chargers weren’t always well positioned. Off the main stretch places like Colac, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton were “charge and shop at Coles”.

Overall a great trip. On future trips I’ll plan more third party charging where they’re better positioned but ONLY WHEN Tesla has a nearby charger… for when these third party are broken or full.
