Topping up tyres on a cold morning

Our Tesla warned us on the way from Bombala to Cann River, the other day, that low tyre pressure was impacting our range. The low tyre pressure is due to the persistent cold temperatures.

So, I figured I best do something about it. I opened the electric tyre pump that we bought nearly two years ago at some car accessory shop. It’s been sitting in the boot since then, along with a can of tyre sealant, in case of a flat.

I plugged it into the 12V socket in the car, set the target pressure to 41psi, and pressed the start button. It rumbled along, pumping up each of the tyres and automatically stopped at the set pressure. Simple.

After a thirty minute drive, I checked the tyre pressures on the Tesla screen. All good. Slightly higher, as expected, due to warming up a bit while driving.

I can now count three things in two years I’ve had to do to “service” the car: pump up tyres, replenish wiper fluid, replace the wiper blades.

    1. Tim Hards a 12V pump on a 12A socket run for an hour would use about the same energy as driving 1km at highway speeds.

  2. Replacing the HEPA filter and cleaning the area in the lower grille are not ones I'm looking forward to doing myself... 🤔

    1. Michael Tiong replacing the HEPA filter is an absolute PITA. Get Tesla to do it for sure. Worth every penny

  3. How many Kms are you up to and have you noticed any drop in range (I remember you like to do some data collection)? 😉

    1. Dane Colson Hi 👋. We’re about to clock over 70,000km. I think the Tesla said we had 428km range when we bought it, nearly two years ago. Now it says 418km. My understanding is that the range reduces mostly at the beginning and levels off, so hopefully won’t drop much more, maybe another 10km in the next two years.

      1. Tesla Tripping that's interesting, i got the subaru knowing its range wasn't brilliant but i am getting between 395 and 406km dropping to 370/380 with regular use of the heating, as i now live in Tasmania thats not really an issue unless i want to start doing laps

  4. My owner servicing is similar: occasionally pump up the tyres, replace windscreen washer fluid and once, replace windscreen wiper blades (2121 Tesla Model 3 LR).

    1. Hugh Sykes Oh Hugh, is that what you’re meant to do? We bought the wiper blades and they sat in the boot for six months. Wondered why the blades hadn’t improved 😜.

    1. Gary Leask The white seats are great. The occasional scuff cleans off easily. The only issue we had was after the first summer showing wrinkles on the driver’s seat. It turned out to be darkened ridges highlighting the slight wrinkles, which made it very prominent. I think it was from my blue jeans, over time. I asked at Magic Car Wash FTG if they could clean it off, and they did!
