Free upgrade: vision-assisted parking

We got an upgraded car today, for free!

Our Tesla Model 3 RWD 2022 now has vision assisted parking. It uses the eight cameras to plot a 3D model of the world around the car, while parking. It shows close objects in orange and red, to alert to proximity. It makes us better aware of obstacles that vision can see, but sonic sensors can’t, such as high gutters that would scrape the car.

Since we also have EAP (Enhanced Autopilot), the auto parking is also updated with the 3D vision. When I stop the car, I can tap on the Tesla screen on an available space in the car park, and the car will park itself. I tried it once today, and it seemed much faster than the previous ultrasonic sensor based parking.

All of this upgrading just happened overnight, when the OTA (over the air) update downloaded via the Internet.

This is one of the things that Tesla does particularly well – ongoing updates to the car’s features at no extra cost.

  1. Interesting that you have park assist. I’ve got the latest model 3 LR with 2024.14.3 software and I don’t have it 🥲

    1. Martin Harrington is think your car needs to update to version 2024.14.5 or later. See screenshot of my phone’s Tesla app, last photo in the post.

      1. Tesla Tripping Do you have a 5k+ option that allows the use of this functionality?

      2. Tesla Tripping yes, sorry. I worded the comment wrongly. I have visual park assist but I don’t have self parking 🤷🏻‍♂️

      4. Colin White Ah, good point. The 3D vision is a free update. But the automated parking is part of the EAP (Enhanced Autopilot) addition for which we paid $5k shortly after we bought the car, when we set off on our first long road trip to Cape Tribulation.

But the free update also updates the paid enhacement 😉.

      5. Tesla Tripping hopefully I’ll get auto park in the 2024.14.5 update. My 2020 S has 2024.14.8 but I Don think it’s got self park. It used to before updates a few months ago. (FSD package)

      6. Tesla Tripping All good, just thought perhaps Martin Harrington didn't have the upgrade thus missed out on the self parking upgrade.

      1. Tesla Tripping no worries. I got the update today, but I'm undecided if it's an improvement. Maybe it will take some time to get used to it. My wife HATES it

Dumb question, but how do I tell if my car can access that update?

    1. Amy Treacy Hmmm, I don’t know. What version is showing as installed versus available in the Software tab on the Tesla screen?

      1. Tesla Tripping it says up to date…I think we might be too old for these cool new features 😔

      2. Amy Treacy Tesla seems to send updates out slowly across the fleet, so you might receive a particular update two weeks after your neighbour with the same model car, for no obvious reason 🤔.

  4. Good to hear the awful auto parking has maybe improved. I might have to try it again.

  5. they may end up following the Microsoft model and charging you to keep your software secure when they eventually move to more advanced software that the current hardware cant handle.
