Planning a 5000 km road trip — through Europe

Next week, we’re off on another big road trip! We think it will be about 5000km, over six weeks. We’ve never traveled these roads before, or checked the EV chargers along the way.

It’s about the same distance as a return trip (from our home in Emerald Victoria) to Rockhampton or Uluru. It’s only slightly more than the double trip we did in May to Cessnock to pick up Mum for a visit to Emerald, and return.

As usual, we’re not sure of our exact route, and we haven’t advance booked any accommodation along the way.

To add some challenge, we’ll drive the entire trip on the right hand side of the road!

As you might have guessed by now, this trip will not be in Australia. This is our first EV road trip overseas and Tom’s first time in Europe.

We’re hiring a Tesla Model Y Long Range in The Netherlands, where we’re staying for a couple of weeks with Fran’s cousin (thanks Nico ☺️). Then we’re driving roughly south east through Europe, visiting Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Switzerland, to Italy, with the return trip possibly including Austria.

We’re hiring the car from UFODRIVE – an all EV rental company. It includes all charging costs along the way. When we’re done, we’ll just return the car to the parking bay, with 10% or more “fuel”, log it in the app as returned, and then walk away. Neat!

While we’re gone, Marvin the mower should be able to keep our lawns tidy. 🤖

Follow along for our adventures. Please let us know if you have any tips on driving through Europe 😊.

  1. This sounds like fun. My sister in Switzerland has a Model 3 and they’ve been as far as Norway and Corsica in it.

  4. I’m planning a European road trip for next year. Until I read this, the thought of specifically hiring a Tesla hadn’t occurred to me! It makes total sense - cheaper holiday and I can step into a car I know and love. Thanks for the tip.

  10. Will you be camping in the Y at all? Just wondering if this is feasible, especially if you're winging it, and miss out on hotel/airbnb accommodation.

    1. Pamela Jane We’re considering it. The challenge is that we can’t really take our camping gear with us on the flight, so we’d need to get everything over there.

  11. Looking forward to following your adventures, we are in Vancouver leaving on a cruise tomorrow through the inside passage Alaska. Can’t believe how many Tesla’s are in Vancouver they are every where. A bit of luck as the Everything Electrical show is on and I am attending it tomorrow formally known as Fully Charged.

  12. If you have time for a visit to Lucca in Italy near Pisa, that was one of our favourite places. Quaint walled city with excellent gelato. Happy Travels to you both

  13. Well the driving in Italy was challenging, maniac scooter drivers. Most locals leave their cars out of gear as often parking is done with a nudge and push, saves some damage. Good luck, keep safe, and don’t except the first price asked.
