Buying a Vignette to drive Swiss roads

Europe 2024 (NL / IT / FR)

Two days ago we were in Belgium. Last night we were in France. Today we crossed the border into Switzerland. We bought the “Vignette” sticker at the border, for about CHF 40 (Swiss Franks, about AU$65), which allows us to drive on all the roads here. It’s kind of a pay once road toll. There are so many tunnels, with more being built. I can see where the toll money goes. We have only seen about two potholes so far in all of Europe.

Like most days, we just book our accommodation in the late afternoon, when we know roughly where we’re going to be at about 4pm. We pick a town on Booking.com, entry a few filters like private bathroom, switch to map view, and look for good value places nearby. We usually choose out of the cities.

This time we choose in the town of Biel/Bienne, which goes by its French and German name. Nice hotel, very friendly and helpful Sofia at reception, who speaks multiple languages.

We ordered a poke bowl for dinner, via Uber Eats delivery. Chilled evening stay.

Charging

As a bonus, the hotel has EV chargers right out the front. Reception advised us to use those spots, rather than doing the “gymnastics” required to get “a big car like your Tesla” into the underground car park.

  1. The two main supermarkets in Switzerland are Coop & Migros.
Many of them, even in small towns, have a pastry shop affair near their entrance.
    Do it!
Many also have a buffet style restaurant upstairs.
They're great. DIY salad plates- you pay by weight. Chefs will cook hot basics on the spot.
In a country where EVERYTHING is expensive, this is reasonable priced, pub quality food that will fill you up & keep you going.
Try the paprika chips for sweet spicy snacks.
In a cafe or restaurant try apler macaroni. Or Zuri schnelettes. Also definitely try a nussli salad mit speck & ei. French dressing.
    YUM!
The Northern Swiss are a bit cold & Germanic. The Southern from French speaking area, much more relaxed.
I married a northerner- but have australised him after 25 years! 😜
    Enjoy. It's beautiful!
If looking for chargers, I recommend the Chargemap app. Does good EV route planning. Even without their charge card, many accept credit cards directly now. Not a huge number of Tesla superchargers in Switzerland.
    Have fun! ♥️
