XPeng G6 — first look at the Everything Electric Show

Fully Charged + Off-Grid Living 2025

The Xpeng G6 is a strong competition against the Tesla Model Y. We viewed both at The Everything Electric Show (Fully Charged Show) in Sydney.

A few weeks earlier, we took a G6 for a test drive at the XPENG Port Melbourne showroom (also pictured).

The Xpeng G6 and Tesla Model Y both have great tech, great efficiency, ventilated and heated front seats.

The G6 doesn’t have frunk storage, has small subtrunk storage, smaller boot, no glovebox, but has a bit more rear passenger room and probably more comfy seats. It has Apple Maps and Vehicle to Load (V2L). It is $10k cheaper, but requires paid regular servicing and and has longer warranty. It includes auto lane change (extra purchase on the Tesla).

The Tesla has faster acceleration, sportier handling, one pedal driving comes to a full stop without the brake, and has more fast charging options. It has a screen for rear passengers and powered rear seat folding. It has much more storage overall, including huge sub trunk, boot and frunk. It has a better sound system, even though it has slightly less speakers.

  2. We recently chose the G6 Long Range over the Model Y Long Range and other EV SUVs of similar sizing. We liked the price point with range that you get and as well as "EAP" as standard among other features. The tech has been excellent along with build quality also It is still quiet punchy with its 440nm torque figure when compared to our old Model 3. Efficiency around 12-17kWh/100km is what we have been getting depending on speeds and roads driven. No complaints yet.

  3. Love the unbiased review. For me, I'm sticking with Tesla for three reasons:

1- No servicing and not as often brake pads replacement.
    2- Constant updates
3- I'm still worried about new car manufacturers' battery management algorithms.

    1. Henry Mulla As far as I can see, right now there is a 10 year warranty with included servicing (fact check to confirm this) of course this might be for a limited time to get orders.

Of course you can choose not to get a Tesla looked over once in a while by a mechanic, but that doesn’t make it right “Not as often brake pad replacement” pads should last just as long. The G6 regen brakes down to around 2km/h, around the same as a Tesla, the difference is the Tesla applies the friction brakes for you, in a G6 you do it…same wear.

I have no idea on number 3…we only know so much about Tesla’s because it’s been around a while and the company has gone to such great lengths to publicise the “million mile” battery theory.
