First road trip in our new Model Y

This morning we set off on our first road trip in our new Tesla Model Y. Compared to our previous Model 3, we have so much room now. Even the sub trunk has another sub trunk. We’re also taking a couple of suitcases to deliver to a family friend along the way. We still managed to find room for the coffee machine.

The autumn trees in our yard turned an ultra red, to send us off.

First stop tonight will be near Wagga Wagga, then on towards Cessnock, Seal Rocks, then back to the Central Coast for a few days, before heading home again.

Charging

I scheduled the car to top up charge in the early hours this morning, but I neglected to turn off “charge on solar”. It turns out that there’s no solar at night 😉. No problem, I just started the charging this morning when I woke up, so we had 80% by the time we left – more than enough to get us to wherever we end up stopping along the way.

  3. It's quite a good refresh. We have a loaner from Tesla over the weekend and it's a brand new refreshed Y. Only had about 40km on it

  5. I remember you were able to flatten M3 and sleep in it. Can you do that with the Y? I’m also keen to hear if you think the Y is ‘slower’ on take off.

    1. Alice Chiew We haven’t tackled sleeping in it yet, but are looking into it. One interesting option to flatten out the bed is Teraglide.

This refreshed Tesla Model Y RWD has acceleration to 100km/h in 5.9s, which is the same as our old Model 3 RWD, and one second faster than the previous Model Y RWD. It feels just as fast off the line as our previous car, but the Model 3 handled better around bends.

      1. Tesla Tripping tbh I don’t really need the speak but I do find the suspension hard on the M3. Is that the same for the Y?

      2. Alice Chiew The suspension is significantly softer in the Y, so it absorbs the bumps more, but doesn’t hug the road quite as well. The new Model Y Juniper has also improved the suspension, so it doesn’t bounce after a bump as much as before.

  6. Take it easy while you are running it in and don't forget to check the oil and water frequently. Enjoy!

    1. Frankly Mydear LOL, yes it did occur to me that there’s no “running in” for a new EV.

  7. Charge on solar is so inflexible. I stopped using it in less than an hour and went back to charge HQ for a month before switching over to evcc.io
