Sleeping in the Tesla — does it fit?

Snowy Mountains + Gippsland 2025–26

Sleeping in the Tesla, on a Snuuzu mattress, on a Teraglide platform.

The obvious question: can I fit? Short answer: plenty of room to sleep, rollover, look at the sky, out the window, or my phone. I never banged into the glass or support arch.

But, getting in is a bit tight. I had to shuffle through, like a recruit in a commando course. I also forgot to pack a collapsible stool, to step onto, high enough at the back to crawl in.

The Snuuzu mattress is super comfortable. It has a few layers of foam, supported by an inflatable layer.

With the back seats down, the Tesla floor slopes down towards the back, with a kink where the seats hinge. This makes sleeping uncomfortable, and slides the occupants slowly down to the boot.

One way to rectify this is to add a slightly elevated floor, that is truly horizontal. That’s where the Teraglide platform comes in.

Teraglide also has a basic model, without the drawer, that isn’t as high as ours. And there are car mattresses that aren’t as thick as the Snuuzu. So, my set up here is probably the highest option. This gives the greatest comfort and most storage space, but also the narrowest opening at the back to crawl through.

The outside temp ranged from 8 to 30°C today, so air conditioned comfort was very welcome, thanks to the Tesla’s “Camp Mode’. It uses about 10% of the car’s battery charge, overnight, whilst also powering my fridge, lights, phone recharging. No engine, fumes or noise.

Great night’s sleep, awakening to views of the nature.

  2. Thanks for the review, Y's must be built different to 3's in regards to sliding, we don't slide down at all.

Our back seats basically lay flat.

    1. Kylie Gilroy I have tried sleeping in our previous Model 3 too. It slides down. It killed our sleep. You must somehow defy gravity.

      1. Tesla Tripping alcoholic helps 🤣 honestly maybe it's the sheets make you more slipperier who knows but we never slid down.

Our mattress was from Teslaunch and isn't as thick as yours but super comfy.

    1. Andrea Dacey If the two people are happy to be close and have good mobility, then I expect it works well. Hip arthritis has prevented the two of us sleeping in the car.

  5. I reckon I’d need an eye mask this time of year with sunrise before 6am, otherwise looks great.

    1. Sam Barnes I wondered about that. I do have full screens for all the windows and roof, but haven’t needed to use them. The sun was low in the morning and didn’t glare, so morning was very pleasant.

  6. thanks for the review. I think I'm sold on the idea. I briefly tried with a mattress in the back of my Y and like you say, you slip downwards. Looking forward to more observations.

  7. Maybe get a towbar so you have something to step up on?

    1. James Pickering Good idea, for when/if I get a tow bar anyway.

  8. Does the Terraglide creak, rattle or squeak when driving?

    1. David Fraser With weight on the Teraglide, such as the rolled up bed and my duffle bag, it doesn’t squeak. With nothing on top, the interleaved halves bang a bit when I go over bumps. I could probably dampen it with a sheet between them if needed.

      2. Tesla Tripping it’s hard to find a decent independent review on the Terraglide. Maybe you could do one?

      3. David Fraser Hi 👋. I’m aimed to cover various aspects of the Teraglide across multiple posts on Tesla Tripping. Are there aspects you’d like me to cover that I haven’t done already?
