Tracking down a 117 L/hour water leak

Our water bill seems a bit high. Hmm, I’ll check if the water meter shows any movement while we’re not using water overnight. Next morning: Blimey: 117 litres per hour.

I can’t hear any leaks – just the fish pond filter. I’ll try turning that off. There’s still a water sound, coming from under the porch. Can’t see anything in there. Call MEK Plumbing. Matt crawls further under the house, to discover that the pressure release valve from the mains supply has blown. Yeah, that’ll do it.

Now to ask Yarra Valley Water to please discount our bill.

🦸🏻‍♂️ Heroes of the story:
Helen for pointing out that our bill was much higher than hers.
Francis for coordinating the checking and fix.
Matt for sliding through the mud to fix it.

  3. We had a water leak 200mm past our water meter :-(

    It was 800lt a day 😲

Lucky we caught it not long after due to meter being above retaining wall.

If bill is excessive we have a letter from plumber

    1. But the the problem is past the meter, why would they discount you? It’s not their problems, it’s a you problem.

  4. Was the sound coming from the perch in the fish pond?

  5. Just curious, why would you get a discount if it's your side of the meter?

    1. Stephen Sizer Yarra Valley offers discounts on water bills for unintentional leaks. We had a leaking solar water heater and they discounted our bill.

      2. Stephen Sizer Most water authorities will do this. In some locations the plumber will need to submit a 'Secret water leak' form.

      3. Craig Harcourt interesting. I had no idea about this. It's fair and reasonable but I didn't realise councils would apply such reason!

  6. Hi Tom, similar situation when my water bill was $1000 rather than the normal $80, 1400litres per day, mains water leak between meter and house, dug up 25 metres of pipe/trench fixed leak, requested discount/compassion from Yarra Valley Water they said yes and you can only get one per 5 year period, this is not uncommon in our rural area, hope this helps you, cheers

  7. Quick! Save that water and use it for the car service... oh... never mind. Sorry to hear. I wonder if they can move that valve to a more accessible (visible) place?

  10. Pressure limiting valve, usually installed on cold feed right at the water heater. Big mistake installing it under a house or verandah where it can't be seen . Can guarantee it was dripping long before it started leaking that bad.
