Following EV-charger signs into Miriam Vale

NSW → QLD Road Trip 2022–23

We spotted a series of small blue EV charger signs along the road, and followed them into Miriam Vale.

What a lovely spot. The EV parking is a little further down the road from town, but there’s a cafe, toilet, nice park. Oh, and bats. Fran is not a fan of bats 🦇

Charging

Only one RACQ Chargefox CCS2 charger, so the Tesla after us had to wait a few minutes. Fortunately, we had both checked in via PlugShare (which helps find an available charger), so we knew who was waiting etc.

    1. Hi Brenda. You can ask any questions you like ☺️. The cost to charge depends on the charging location. Here’s a rough list of costs for us to charge from typical 20% to 80% battery (which is about 260km/36kWh of our 440km/60kWh range).

Home solar: free. Technically we lose the 5c export feed in tariff for that energy, so it’s $1.80.

Home super off peak: $2.84 (we had 7.9c per kWh between midnight and 4am)

      Home off peak: $5.36 (14.9c/kWh)

Destination chargers: free. These are at some hotels, restaurants, car parks and visitor centres. Typical speed 11kW.

DC fast chargers: $16.56. They vary, but this is based on typical $0.46 per kWh. Typical speed 50kW. Currently they are free for NRMA chargers in NSW.

DC superchargers: $23.40. Based on typical $0.65 per kWh. Typical speed 150 to 350kW.

      2. Brenda McKinnon Those are the costs we typically pay to charge (from 20% to 80%), since we never roll in on empty and rarely need 100%. But theoretically, if we were to charge from empty to full (60kWh or 438km in our case), then the costs would be:

Home solar: free. (Losing $3 feed in tariff).

Home super off peak: $4.74. (About 1c per km)

        Home off peak: $8.94

        Destination chargers: free

        DC fast chargers: $27.60

        DC superchargers: $39
