Indian lunch at the Broadway Superchargers

Fully Charged Sydney + Victoria 2023

Indian for lunch.

Boring charging details: We navigated through the carpark at Broadway Shopping Centre to the Tesla superchargers (and other chargers) near the exit. The first Tesla supercharger was empty, with the cable on the ground. We tried it, but realised that the cable in the ground was a signal from the previous person that it wasn’t working. All the other superchargers were full, so we tried the available Tesla destination charger, but we missed the red light indicating that it too wasn’t working. Then we tried the third party chargers which required our own type 2 cable, but I couldn’t get an Internet connection for the Chargefox app to unlock it. One of the other cars vacated a supercharger, so we pulled in. Fortunately we had discussed with another one that pulled in afterwards that we were “next”, since there’s no queuing mechanism. It worked, but was slow and the power jumped between 12kW and 60kW.

Then a Tesla technician arrived. Very nice guy. We moved to a fully working charger and left him to his work, while we had lunch. 25 minutes later, the app told us to return to our car since it was nearly ready to go.

The technician mentioned that all the chargers were down about a week ago, because the mains to the whole shopping centre had failed. The centre then ran on emergency generators (diesel, I presume), so they turned off the car chargers.

  3. I'm impressed that you found that obscure LG charger location! One wrong move and you are out of the exit boom gate again. Well done.

      1. James Mackness No surprise. Being a local and customer at that shopping centre since the beginning, I had no ideas that LG level even existed, let alone finding it when I was getting ready for my EV purchase back then.

    2. Weiyun Sydney Thanks. Yes, we took the precaution of checking the directions in the PlugShare app, because just a few days earlier we had tried to find the chargers in Macquarie Centre. Now, that was a nightmare. We couldn’t find those, even after several laps. At least Broadway has a few signs to the chargers.

      1. Tesla Tripping Yes, those two locations made us wonder whether the Tesla staff responsible for setting up the two key Sydney Supercharger stations back then was an ex-Batcave employee. Designed as an intelligence test on new owners. 🤣

  6. The internet connection issue with chargefox basement chargers is why I ordered the (free) chargefox RFID card :-)
