Tyre rotation — and a recommended replacement

Slightly overdue for another tyre rotation (16,700km since previous check, but due at 10,000km intervals). So, I booked one in via the Tesla app, which quoted $71.28.

Mobile service came to me. Amar, the Tesla technician, was very friendly, efficient and helpful. All his tools were in the trunk and frunk of his Tesla Model S service vehicle. He showed me that the tyres had unevenly worn, so the inside tread (on the right in the photo) was below spec on all tyres, requiring the replacement. He said he could cancel today’s call-out (so, no cost to me) and book in a tyre replacement at the Tesla service centre (big cost). I asked him to make it so.

  1. So did you only get 16,000kms out of one set of tyres?
    If so, that’s really low

    1. Daniel Rond I think that's since his last rotation (which wasn't that long ago iirc).

    2. Sorry for the confusion. Tyre rotation is recommended every 10,000km. It’s been 16,700km since their last rotation, not since new.

They are high performance tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport 4), which obviously means great grip etc. but they also only last about 40,000km, it seems. Still, it’s better than my motorcycle tyres that would only last 8,000 to 16,000km, if I recall correctly.

Stay tuned for the next post about the tyre replacements 🤑.

      1. Tesla Tripping ok that’s fine but personally by the photo of your tyre it’s not below the west marks.
I would get a second opinion as to me there’s at least 50% tread left in those PS4’s

      2. Tesla Tripping btw, how many kms total have you done on those tires?

      3. Tesla Tripping do you also get regular wheel alignments done?
They make the tyre life extend further.

      4. Daniel Rond We did about 38,000km on those original tyres.

      5. Daniel Rond We get regular (ish) tyre rotation done. I think part of that service is to determine if wheel alignment is required?

      6. Tesla Tripping unless it goes up on a rack and has the proper laser equipment attached to check your toe and camber, you won’t know if the alignment is out or not.
That photo of your tyre shows legal tread.
When you’re talking $280ish per tyre replacement cost, I wouldn’t bin them yet.
Any tyre shop can measure tread depth and tell you how many kms (regular driving) you have left.

My bet is at least 15,000 going by that picture.

      10. Daniel Rond that's for a 17 inch rim we have 18 inch so I'm guessing that's why they are cheaper?

But I didn't think Tesla could have 17inch but please correct me if I'm wrong.

      11. Daniel Rond that's fine but EV's need specific tyres, to replace our tyre it will cost $419 each from Bob Jane for example.

        Why do they need specific
245/45/19’s are road/track tyres for all vehicles.
        EV and ICE

Propulsion mode of the vehicle does not determine type of tyre used.
        It’s how you use them

      18. Daniel Rond yes nobody is disputing that, that's for a long range and the performance, we aren't taking about those models, your photo shows $200 tyres not suitable for EV's.

These are what the M3 AWD come with.

      21. Daniel Rond ok thanks, that's a different load speed rating and it's also a slightly different profile to what's come factory fitted but I'll definitely check with the tyre people when we are due, because that's a very good price compared to everything I've been quoted.

        Thanks for the info.

      22. Kylie Gilroy just a bit over my $280ish price guess but no where near $400

My main comment is that there’s more tread left in his tyres and when you’re spending that amount of money, don’t get rid of them when there’s plenty of tread left.

  2. We're the opposite. Our M3LR had a tyre rotation at 15,000 and last week made it to 30,000. Tesla tech found wear to be identical on all tyres, with 5mm on one side and 4.5mm on the other, of each tyre. Didn't need a rotation. Also said we obviously look after the car. It came from Shanghai with Pirelli P Zero.

  4. By the look of the tyre wear as pictured I would suspect that you need a wheel alignment. Incorrect camber adjustment. Won’t help now with these tyres.

    1. Ross Britton Thanks. A few days later, at the Tesla service center, they said that they deliberately camber the wheel alignment that way 🤔.

      1. Tesla Tripping seems weird, that promotes wear. If it was me I would have taken it to a tyre service, just for a second opinion.
Had that happen years ago only to find out the dealer didn’t perform a wheel alignment at the first service check.

      2. Tesla Tripping I would second this, We had ours aligned at around 13 14,000 km. Took it back for rotation at around the 28,000 mark, and was told it wasn't necessary. I asked them at the time about the wear on the inside edges of all four of ours and got the same answer you did, that it is normal.

I am thinking we will only get 40,000 out of these tires, then they will all be either at or beyond the wear bars, but only on the inside edge of each.
