Booking jackpot at Cape Hillsborough

Queensland Coast 2023

Sometimes it’s a bit of a lottery when booking somewhere new and unseen. Often, we hit the jackpot, like we did here at Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park. It’s a caravan, camping and cabin park, in a national park, with beaches, mangroves, stunning landscapes and rock formations, walks, a couple of kangaroos hopping around the park and a whole mob coming out for sunrise on the beach each morning.

We’ll be making or own meals for a few days. Delicious fruit salad and yogurt is a great start.

Stay tuned for more photos, including the kangaroos on the beach.

Charging

The staff were very helpful. When booking, they said we could plug into a power point at the cabin. But when we got there, we discovered that our particular cabin had no outside power point. We ran the cable through the sliding door to an inside power point, but when the small bugs (midges?) started biting we closed the door fully. I asked at reception and they said I could use the adjacent vacant cabin’s outside power point, and later a vacant caravan site. All 15A (3.6kW) which is pretty ideal for several hours charging, such as when sleeping.

I heard that management was considering installing dedicated faster EV chargers, but the site is already straining their allocated grid supply. So, I mentioned that all EV guests really need is a 15A power point. Hopefully that’s makes it easier long term.

  2. Yep, all I’ve needed to charge at a caravan park is a 15A power point. I’ve also bought a 15A RCD protected 4 outlet safety brick purely because I’ve come across 15A power points in caravan parks that are angled weirdly and make it impossible to plug the UMC into. I started with a 15A extension lead, but the shortest I could find is 12m, which is way too long for our needs.

      1. Peter Hofland I haven’t seen anything shorter than a 12m 15A lead at any Bunnings store I’ve been to in the Newcastle/Port Stephens/Lake Macquarie area. I would have bought a 5m lead in a heartbeat if I could find one.

      2. Mel Legge I’ll take another look, I bought 10m as that’s all I needed.
