Keys to our new home in Emerald

After travelling in our EV for a year, up and down the east coast of Australia, we have the keys to our new home, in Emerald Victoria! After a few stressful days wondering if the money transfer worked with ANZ Australia, we picked up our keys from Barry Plant Emerald.

Thanks also to Mortgage Choice in Tumbi Umbi, NSW, for sorting out the otherwise mind numbing loan application forms, to get us this far.

The painter has already started prepping. We’ve organised new carpet. Hopefully the solar and battery will follow soon from Lightning Energy.

Charging

The all important test of our new home: the power point in the garage charged the car at 2.3kW for a couple of hours with no heating in the power point. So, the electrics seem good!

Lightning Energy will also be connecting our Tesla wall charger, when it arrives with our removalist in about three weeks. The house has only single phase power, so we’ll get about 7.5kW out of it. That’s 7.5kWh per hour. So, our 60kWh battery will get half a tank in 30 / 7.5 = 4 hours. That will come free from our solar panels.

Be prepared for wild storms taking out the power though

    1. Scott Cassidy Thanks for the tip. We’ve already ordered a Tesla Powerwall battery, and a 15kW solar system from Lightning Energy. We’ll keep everyone posted on how that goes. We should be self sufficient during any blackouts.

      1. Tesla Tripping so your upgrading to 3 phase?
        1

        Reply

      2. Scott Cassidy No. Not planning on upgrading to three phase power. We had three phase at our last home. That meant that during a blackout, we couldn’t run solar (three phase) to battery (single phase), unless we had three batteries or three inverters. Seemed overkill. Since our Tesla car can only draw a max of 11kW from a three phase 22kW charger, it doesn’t seem that advantages over the 7.5kW will get from single phase.

      3. Tesla Tripping unless your going 10kW Inverter plus 5kW Powerwall.

      4. Scott Cassidy 15kW solar and 13.5kWh (5kW) Tesla Powerwall battery.

  4. Congratulations 🎉👏 Are you going to use ChargeHQ to maximize the solar charging ?

    1. Paul Johnston Possibly. We used Charge HQ at our last home a year ago. But since then, Tesla has incorporated charging from sunshine into its ecosystem (Powerwall and EV wall charger). That might be be all we need 🤔.

      1. Tesla Tripping I didn't realise you were getting a Powerwall, yes that will work too. I look forward to a future post on 'Tesla tripping the breakers'

  10. Enjoy! We moved from Emerald last year after 5 wonderful years.

If you can, get a Tesla powerwall for blackout protection as there are lots of power cuts.

You will love living there. Give PB a wave from us and Incy Wincy is by far the best for coffee.

    1. Mark Lockwood-Porter Thanks for the tips! We are getting a Tesla Powerwall battery. If blackouts trip the battery backup, then “Tesla Tripping” will have a whole new meaning!

    2. Mark Lockwood-Porter if you are connected to the grid and it goes down, don’t your photovoltaics and battery also get disconnected to prevent the local part of the grid from being energised while repairs are in progress?

    1. Ross Britton Ha, not the wagon wheels, but some kind of old iron rotary hoe.

We won’t be unpacking for three weeks until the removalist delivers it from our storage shed in NSW.

Now we're retired, we moved to Heritage Bank. People actually answer phones & good customer service unlike ANZ.
